Text Box: Message from the chair As in years past, we cancelled our January meeting in honor of Mar- tin Luther King Day, giving our members the opportunity to partici- pate in some of the local events honoring the life and work of the great civil rights leader. Much has been accomplished in furtherance of the civil and human rights goals for which King gave his all, but there are important steps yet to be taken. The Democratic Party shares King’s dreams: that every man, woman, and child be afforded equal opportunity in education and employment, with equal pay for equal work, and access to affordable health care. De- spite setbacks and delays, it is important that we remember that, as Ted Kennedy said, “The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.”

Mike Simpson, 65th District State Representative,

succumbed to a heart attack on Friday, December

18. He was in his second term representing Jackson

County, but he had been a  friend of the JCDC for

much longer than that. His passion and hard work in

serving his constituents, his state, and his con-

science inspired our deep admiration and affection.
