As America prepares to mark the 42nd anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, I am honored to announce this unparalleled effort to bring the ideals of that landmark law closer to reality,” Mark Brewer Chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party said.

The executive board is proud to announce that Brenda Abbey, our former Vice Chair, was elected on May 16 to serve as Chair of the Jackson County Democratic Committee.

Brenda’s ascension to chair opened her previous position, so Ron Fabian, local attorney and past chairman of JCDC was elected to serve as Vice Chairman.

At that same meeting the board was presented with a letter of resignation from Mike Sadler, whose busy personal and work schedules no longer allowed him to serve as secretary, web master, and newsletter editor. The board accepted his resignation with regret, and elected Jan Rochefort to fill the vacancy. Jan is also a previous chair of JCDC, as well as long-serving former treasurer of Jackson County.

We are eternally grateful for the service of Leonard Smigielski, and wish good fortune to Mike Sadler. And we welcome our new officers who, together with Treasurer Sandy Marsh and Vice Chairs Sandy McCann and Pattie Rayl, are poised to lead Jackson County into the 2010 elections, when Democrats in Michigan will retain the governorship and State House, gain the majority in the State Senate, and continue to lead the state and the nation into new prosperity!

Introducing: Brenda Abbey, JCDC Chair

It is with great humility that I begin my tenure as Chair of the Jackson County Democratic Committee. There have been only two women as chair prior to me, Janet Rochefort and Carlene Walz Lefere, both of whom are extraordinary people. We all face some real work in the immediate future. We have a special senate election, then perhaps a special state representative election, then a fight to make sure that Mark Schauer remains our Congressman, then fights over new district lines for both the Congressional District and the County Commission.

These are tough times. We will all need to be tough, hard-working and unified. We cannot think that because we have more Democrats in high office than ever before that our job is done. It is not. We must keep those Democrats in office. We must bring in new members. We must help create the Democrats of the future. We must spread the Democratic message wherever we go and whatever we do. Times are rapidly changing. We need to lend our strength to those who stumble, often through no fault of their own. To those who are suffering, we need to share our experience and hope. We are the bedrock of America and we will continue to assert ourselves, our dream and our absolute faith that no matter how tough times may be, that tomorrow will be better than today.

I’d very much like us all to get to know each other better, to laugh together, and to share. On July 26 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Jan Rochefort’s Hankerd Inn, the JDCD will once again hold it’s "annual" Democratic picnic. The main course is free but bring a passing dish! Jackson’s famous band Kung Fu Diesel will be there! Be there or be square!

I look forward to seeing you all at the next JCDC meeting. Thanks for your help and support! All together now!

Democratically Yours,

Brenda Abbey
